Throw pillows and blankets for a black corduroy couch
Room styling illustration.
A pale pillow is easy to spot on a black couch. The harder part is finding one you still like beside the rug, curtains, and lamp already in the room. Start with those pieces before ordering a stack of cushion covers.
Black corduroy brings its own pattern: the repeating ribs. You can add color without covering much of that fabric.
Pick a color from somewhere else in the room
Look for a small color you would like to see again. Rust in a print, olive in a rug, or cream in the curtains gives a new pillow something to relate to. Try that color at one end of the couch first.
Cream makes a clear contrast with black. Camel looks quieter beside warm wood, while a muted green sits comfortably among plants. These are starting points, not a matching set to buy. A cool gray pillow might look right with your stone floor and slightly out of place beside a golden wood table.
If you prefer dark cushions, change the surface instead. A smooth charcoal cover will look different from black ribbed upholstery even when the colors are close. Check them together in daylight; a glossy fabric can catch far more light than its online swatch suggests.
Give a pattern enough room to show
The ribs on our 96-inch L-shaped couch are visible across the seats and back. A broad stripe or a large, loose print reads more clearly beside them than several tiny patterns competing at once.
Try a patterned pillow next to a plain one that repeats a color from the print. Then look from the doorway. You should be able to see the pattern without walking up to the couch. If the rug already carries a busy design, a plain pillow may be all the contrast you want.
Size matters most when you sit down. A pillow that looks generous in a photograph might push you onto the edge of your usual seat. Keep the ones you lean on; return or relocate the ones you move every evening.
Put the blanket where you reach for it
Fold a throw over the arm nearest your favorite seat, or lay it across a small part of the back. Keep its edge off the floor. You can see the black upholstery, and the blanket is still close when the room cools down.
On the chaise, leave the long sitting surface open. A thick pile of blankets at the foot looks inviting until there is nowhere to put your feet. If several people use different throws, store the extras nearby rather than displaying them all on the couch.
Finish by sitting in your regular spot. If a cushion supports your arm and the blanket is within reach, leave them there. The arrangement can be a little uneven.
