How to pair an accent chair with an L-shaped couch
Room styling illustration.
An accent chair gives someone a seat of their own. Beside an L-shaped couch, its position matters as much as its color. A chair across the open side can make conversation easier; one in the doorway becomes an obstacle.
Before looking for a matching pair, try a single chair you already own. You may find that one extra seat is enough, or that you prefer leaving the space open.
Start with one chair across the opening
Place the chair on the open side of the L and turn it slightly toward the couch. Sit in it while someone uses a regular couch seat. You should be able to talk without both people twisting toward each other.
Then get up and walk out of the group. Check the route behind the chair as well as the gap beside the coffee table. A chair pulled close enough for conversation can still make the room difficult to cross.
If a full armchair crowds the opening, try a narrower outline. Look at the arms and back, not just the seat width. A broad curved back may project into the route even when the chair's front legs fit where you want them.
Give the chair a different outline
A chair does not have to copy the couch. Beside our 96-inch L-shaped couch, a smooth fabric or a visible wood frame offers contrast to the black corduroy. A curved back can sit comfortably in the same arrangement as the couch's longer, straighter lines.
You can connect the two pieces with something smaller. The wood in a chair frame might echo the coffee table; a color in a rug might appear in the chair's upholstery. That is enough of a link without ordering every piece in the same fabric.
If you already have a patterned chair you like, try it first. Keep the cushions around it fairly simple while you judge the combination. Add other patterns after you have seen the chair beside the couch.
Make the separate seat useful
Give the chair a place for a drink. It may share the coffee table, or need a small surface beside it. Sit back normally when checking the reach; a table that works only when you perch on the edge will be frustrating.
Compare the seats from that position too. If one puts a person's eyes much higher than the other, try the combination before committing to it. Similar-looking furniture can feel quite different when two people sit down together.
You can leave the second side open. One chair, a couch, and a table may already do everything you need. Live with that arrangement before buying another seat to make the room symmetrical.
