Rug Size for a Sectional: Test the Layout in Inches

The same rug can look quite different when you rotate it beside a sectional. A long edge running along the couch gives you one boundary; turn it the other way and that extra width may disappear.

Compare the rug and couch in the same units before choosing a size. Then mark where the edges will land in the room.

Put the measurements side by side

Our 96-inch L-shaped couch is 96 inches wide and reaches a maximum overall depth of 60.2 inches. Sketch the L shape rather than treating the whole outline as a filled rectangle.

Rugs are often listed in feet. One foot equals 12 inches, so the following sizes become:

These are two examples to compare, not a rule that one of them belongs under every sectional.

See what rotation changes

Put the 120-inch edge of an 8 × 10 ft rug parallel to a 96-inch couch and the rug extends 24 inches beyond its width. Centered, that's 12 inches at each end.

Rotate it so the 96-inch edge runs along the couch, and those side extensions disappear. Its remaining depth now reaches farther into the room. You may gain coverage near the coffee table while placing an edge closer to a doorway.

Try both positions on paper with the chaise and table shown. Decide which part of the floor you want the rug to cover.

Place it for this couch and this room

A low-profile couch doesn't necessarily have the raised front legs used in common rug-placement diagrams. Look at how its base meets the rug, and follow any model-specific placement guidance.

Use paper markers or tape suitable for the floor to outline the rug. Open the nearby door, pull out a chair, and walk around the chaise. Check the actual rug's thickness and edges with the seller too; a flat outline can't show those details.

Keep a note of which edge faces the couch and where the nearest corner lands. That is the arrangement you're buying the rug for, rather than a size chosen from the sofa width alone.
