First Apartment Furniture: What to Buy Before the Extras

An empty apartment makes everything look urgent. Start with what lets you sleep, eat, and use the room after dark. The rug and extra cushions can wait until you know where you spend your time.

Bring the furniture you already have into the plan before buying a matching set.

Get the first few days working

A usable sleep setup, a place to eat, and the lighting you need come first. An existing desk and chair may cover meals while you settle in. Built-in storage may let you wait before choosing a dresser.

Your routine decides the next purchase. If you work at home, the desk setup may need attention before the living room. If there's already a table but nowhere to sit together in the evening, a couch moves up the list.

Write down the few things you need immediately and leave the rest open. You'll have better reasons for those choices once you've lived there.

Choose the couch around an ordinary evening

Think about how you'll use it: watching television together, reading at one end, or stretching out after work. That gives you a shape to look for before you compare colors.

Our 96-inch L-shaped couch combines regular seating with a chaise. Try its outline in your room, including the 96-inch width and maximum 60.2-inch depth. Keep space for the route between the entrance and kitchen and the table you already own.

If the outline crosses that route, try another placement before committing. A couch that fills the wall can still be too much furniture for the room around it.

Plan how it arrives

Compare the package information for the selected model with the building entrance, stair turns, or elevator. Check where the carrier will leave it and whether your building has delivery-hour rules.

Arrange any carrying help you need and include that in the budget. Read the current return terms before opening compressed packaging. For a detailed route check, use our sectional measuring guide.

Let the smaller purchases follow

Use the couch before choosing a coffee table or another lamp. Notice where you put a glass and which corner is dark in the evening.

Buy the table that solves that problem. The rest of the room can take shape around what you actually do there.
