Can you put a couch in front of a window?

Yes, a couch can work in front of a window. It can free up an interior wall for the TV or a bookcase, especially in a room with more windows than uninterrupted wall space.

The arrangement needs to work when you open the window, draw the curtains, and sit down. A couch that looks neatly centered in a photo may still make one of those everyday jobs awkward.

Give the curtains room to move

Before choosing the couch's position, open the curtains fully and notice where the fabric gathers. Then close them. The back of the couch needs to sit far enough forward for the fabric to hang and move without getting trapped.

Check the handle and the window's opening path too. If you normally reach across that part of the wall, imagine doing it with the couch in place. Keep required emergency exits accessible. If there's a radiator or heater below the window, use its manufacturer's clearance instructions when planning the gap.

That space behind the couch is part of the layout. Include it before deciding how much room remains for the coffee table.

Look at the window from the doorway

How much glass would the back of the couch cover? A narrow band across the bottom creates a different view from a backrest that reaches halfway up the window.

Our 96-inch L-shaped couch has a listed overall height of 33 inches. Compare that height with your window sill, measured from the floor. Whether it sits below the glass depends on your room.

Look from the doorway as well as from directly in front of the window. An off-center arrangement can leave a useful route beside the couch or keep more of the view visible. You can balance the seating area with a lamp or side table rather than lining up every edge.

Put the chaise where you can still get past it

A chaise projects farther into the room than the rest of the couch. Plan where its end will land relative to the door, the table, and your usual route through the room.

For the 96-inch model, the overall depth reaches 60.2 inches at the chaise. Compare the selected left- or right-facing configuration with your room sketch; don't assume the chaise can switch sides after purchase. Our chaise direction guide explains how to read the two orientations.

If you need the seating area to open into a sleeping space, the 78.7-inch convertible sofa bed is a different option. Its listed overall height is 27.1 inches, and its expanded footprint is approximately 78.7 by 78.7 inches. Plan for that expanded shape and a route around it, along with access to the window.

Try the view from your seat

Sit where you expect to spend time. In the afternoon, check for glare on the TV or a laptop. After dark, close the curtains and see where a reading lamp would go.

If the garden or street view is what you enjoy most about the room, try facing the couch toward the window instead. You may prefer seeing outside from your seat to having the window behind you.
