Left- or right-facing chaise? Choose the side that works in your room
Room styling illustration.
The chaise looks like the best seat until it sits across the route to the kitchen. Before choosing a side, picture how you enter the room and where you usually walk after sitting down.
Two couches can have the same dimensions and feel quite different in the same room. Put the long seat on the other end and you change the space beside the coffee table, the way someone joins you, and the route to the window.
Start at the doorway
Look into the room from its main entrance. Which side gives you a direct route to the regular seats? If the chaise extends across that route, everyone has to walk around its end before sitting down.
Now follow the other trips you make: from the couch to the kitchen, or past it to a balcony door. A position that works from the front door may still interrupt the route you use most often.
Draw the couch in both directions on a rough room sketch. Include the coffee table you plan to keep. It is easy to picture an open route when you have left the table out of the drawing.
Give the lounging seat a useful view
The clearest route is a good starting point, but someone will spend time on the chaise. Think about what they will face when they put their feet up. The television might be straight ahead from one end and awkwardly off to the side from the other.
If you usually read there, check where the lamp and a place for your book would go. A chaise tucked into a corner can feel comfortable while leaving no reachable surface for a cup.
Our 96-inch L-shaped couch is offered in left- and right-facing configurations. Its overall footprint is 96 inches wide by 60.2 inches deep. The longer section needs space in either version; the choice is where that space works best in your room.
Match the selected option to its picture
Left and right are easy to mix up when one person is picturing the couch from the front and another is imagining sitting on it. Keep the product image open while choosing the configuration. Match the pictured chaise to your room sketch, then check the selected option again before ordering.
A mirror image of a room can make the opposite side look equally convincing. It does not tell you that a delivered couch can be switched from one side to the other.
