What Is a Compressed Sofa? A Practical Guide for U.S. Homes
A compressed sofa arrives in a reduced-volume package and takes its finished shape after unpacking. That can make a large couch easier to plan into a home with a narrow entrance or a stair turn. You'll be checking the size of a carton along the delivery route, then the size of the couch in the room.
The packaging is only one part of the purchase. You still get to choose the shape, upholstery, and support that suit the way you sit.
What arrives at the door
The package dimensions tell you what has to get through the entrance. Measure the clear opening with the door in position, and look at the turn just beyond it. An elevator or landing can be the tight spot even when the front door is wide enough.
Allow for the package's weight as well. A compact carton may still require carrying help. Ask where the carrier will leave it so you can plan the last part of the trip into the room.
Our room and delivery-route guide covers the measurements to take.
What the couch is like once it's open
Our 96-inch L-shaped couch has corduroy upholstery over individually pocketed coils and high-density foam. The chaise gives you somewhere to stretch out alongside the regular seating area.
For a room that occasionally hosts overnight guests, the 78.7-inch convertible sofa bed has a different job: daytime seating that opens into an extra sleeping area. The delivery format doesn't make those two products interchangeable.
Think about which use matters to your household, then choose the model around it.
Getting ready to unpack
Clear the space where the couch will go before opening the package. Keep sharp tools away from the upholstery and follow the setup instructions supplied for that model, including its recovery guidance.
Keep the packaging while you check that everything has arrived as expected. If a part is missing or damaged, photos of the item and its package labels will help support identify the problem.
Plan for the finished couch too. A box that fits through the door can still open into furniture that crowds the room, so mark the couch's footprint before delivery day.
